Both are safety plastics. Trivex is a bit sharper and a bit lighter. Polycarbonate is cheaper and everywhere. The gap is real and small.

The numbers that differ
Polycarbonate: index 1.59, Abbe ~30, density ~1.20. Trivex: index 1.53, Abbe ~43–45, density ~1.11. Abbe is a stand-in for colour fringing; higher is calmer. Trivex is thicker than poly for the same prescription because the index is lower, but lighter because the plastic is less dense. In a modest Rx the thickness difference is 0.3–0.8mm. You will feel the weight more than you will see the thickness.
Both pass impact tests that CR-39 and glass fail. For drill-mount rimless, Trivex is less likely to crack at the hole.
Who should pay up
Anyone who hated poly last time. Rimless and semi-rimless. A prescription that already wants high-index but also wants impact resistance — some labs will steer you to 1.60 with a hard coat instead, which is a different compromise.
- Kids and ball sports: either, poly is cheaper
- Rimless: Trivex
- Strong Rx plus safety: ask the lab; do not guess from a blog table
Coatings still matter more than the brand of plastic
Hard coat, UV (inherent in both), anti-reflective on indoor pairs. A $90 Trivex with no AR will annoy you on a night drive more than $60 poly with AR. Buy the stack, not the buzzword.

- Can I feel the difference?
- On a low prescription, often no. On ±3.00 and up, some people see less fringe with Trivex. That is the buyer.
- Is Trivex thinner?
- No. Poly is thinner for the same power. Trivex is lighter and optically calmer.
- Is it worth it on sunglasses?
- Only if they are prescription sport or you already bounced off poly. Fashion sun tints do not need the Abbe lecture.
