Tropical Wool vs Fresco: Open Weave, High Twist, Summer Suits
Tropical wool is a light, tightish worsted for heat. Fresco is a high-twist open weave that breathes more and wrinkles less. Both are summer cloths, not year-round defaults.

Hold it to the light
Fresco: pinholes of light, springy yarns, a dry hand that does not feel like satin. It resists wrinkles because the twist wants to bounce back. It can look slightly textured at 1 metre — that is the weave, not pilling. Tropical: smoother, fewer pinholes, more drape, more wrinkle along the lapel roll if you sit for a three-hour lunch. Both should still be 100% wool or a wool with a small high-twist mohair for extra snap. Polyester “tropical performance” is a different, shinier object.
Weight bands sit in suit fabric weight. Fresco at 260 g will often wear cooler than a closed tropical at 250 g.
When to wear which
Outdoor summer wedding, 30 °C: fresco or tropical, navy or a mid-grey, not black. Air-con office in a hot city: fresco weekday, because the mesh moves air when you walk between buildings. Photograph next to a white shirt: smooth tropical looks dressier; fresco looks more textured and less “wedding hire.” Pair with a light-blue shirt if you sweat; white shows it.

Construction still matters in the heat
Unlined or half-lined backs help both cloths. A full canvas in fresco is a luxury that still breathes; a heavy fuse in tropical will feel like a plastic chest at 2 pm. Shoulder pad: keep it under 1.2 cm. Tie: grenadine or a knit, not a lined 10 cm blade. Watch: 9–11 mm thick, 36–40 mm, not a 16 mm diver under a paper-light cuff. Shoes: dark brown calf or suede; heavy commando soles look at war with 250 g wool.
Questions, answered
- Is fresco only for Italy in August?
- It is a hot-weather and humid-weather cloth. It also works in any city with brutal air-con swings. It is not a snow cloth.
- Will people see through fresco?
- You may see light through the cloth in a window test. Lined or half-lined, in navy or charcoal, it is not sheer on the body. Pale grey fresco in a strong sun can be a bit revealing at the thigh — darker is safer.
- Mohair blend or plain fresco?
- A little mohair adds crease resistance and a harder hand. Plain high-twist wool is enough. A 50% mohair fashion suit can shine.
