When Does Sunscreen Expire?
Filters die. The printed date is real. A 12M jar icon is a year after opening, not a suggestion. Last summer’s boot-of-the-car bottle is a guess.

Dates, jars, and what heat does
Sunscreen is a chemical (or mineral) system in a cream. UV filters degrade with time and heat. A bottle that lived in a glovebox at 60°C is not the bottle that passed the lab. The PAO open-jar icon — often 12M — starts when you crack the seal. A printed expiry wins if it comes first.
Makeup expiry logic is the same family of labels; sunscreen is less forgiving than powder blush because the job is a number on your skin.
When to throw it without a calendar
Watery separation that will not mix. A sour or ‘plastic’ smell. Grit in a mineral lotion that used to be smooth. A spray that sputters air. Any of those, it is done — even if the date is next year.

How not to hoard SPF
A face tube you finish in 3–6 months is the right size. Buy travel minis for holidays rather than a 400ml family bottle you will still be scraping in year three. Apply it as the last morning step — order of application — and reapply on outdoor days. Expired SPF is not a ‘light moisturizer.’

- A little leftover protection plus a false number is how people burn. Buy a new tube. $12–$28.
- Do mineral sunscreens last longer?
- The minerals are stable; the base still goes. Treat the date the same.
- Can I freeze it to save it?
- No. You will split the emulsion. Cool cupboard, not a science project.
