When to Wear Brogues: Quarter, Semi, Full, and Longwing

How much punching, how much formality

Quarter-brogue: a few perforations along a cap seam. Semi-brogue: punching on the cap plus a medallion on the toe. Full brogue / wingtip: a W-shaped cap with punching that looks like wings. Longwing: the wings meet at the heel. Each step is more decoration and less ceremony. A plain cap-toe remains the interview default. Punching began as drainage on country shoes; it still reads as country when it is dense.

Closed lacing still outranks decoration. A quarter-brogue oxford is dressier than a plain-toe derby. Keep that ladder next to oxford versus derby when you buy.

Rooms that take punching, rooms that do not

Navy suit, brown semi-brogue, slight break, 30–32 mm brown belt: a standard weekday in offices that allow brown shoes. Charcoal suit, black quarter-brogue: possible; a plain cap-toe is quieter. Funeral, court, black tie: no broguing, or so little you would not name it. Tweed, flannel, hopsack sport coat: full brogue, including in suede. Two-tone spectator brogues are a jazz outfit, not a first pair.

Colour, sole, and scale

Brown punching looks like texture. Black punching looks like a uniform from a different decade unless the last is sleek and the suit is charcoal. Rubber commando soles under a full brogue are a country boot in spirit — fine in rain with odd trousers, wrong under Super 120s. The medallion should sit on the toe, not cover half the vamp. A 4 cm chunky welt on a wingtip fights a 7.5–9 cm lapel; keep the welt in proportion, about 4–5 mm of welt showing.
