An attache is a hard-sided hinged box. A briefcase is a soft or semi-structured case with a handle. One is luggage. One is a bag.

Attache vs Briefcase — still life for this Bags guide on Nonchallant

Box versus bag

Attache: hinged, often two clasps, sometimes a combination lock that is theatre, a rigid shell in leather-over-wood or moulded plastic. Interior is a tray. A 13-inch laptop rattles unless you add a sleeve. Exterior centimetres barely compress — sizers hate them, rain is less of a soak and more of a wipe.

Briefcase: handle, optional strap, zip or flap, sides that can gusset. It is the office bag in the size guide. It can slump if cheap. It can stand if built.

For a walking commute in a suit, a slim backpack can be quieter than either — backpack with a suit. The attache is a car-to-boardroom object in 2026.

Buying used, buying new

Used attaches from the 1980s can be excellent hide over a sound frame at $80–$200. Check the hinges, the clasps, and whether the lining is dust. New fashion “attaches” in PU are heavy jewellery.

A briefcase in top-grain at $300–$800 should still list interior centimetres. If the hangtag only says genuine leather, you know the grade.

Questions, answered

Is attaché spelled with an accent?
In French, yes. The URL and many English shops drop it: attache. Same hard-sided case.
Can an attache be a personal item?
Only if the rigid centimetres fit the sizer. Most 44 × 32 × 8 cases fail depth or look like you brought a briefcase as your only bag. Soft is easier under a seat.
Does an attache look outdated?
In a law or finance room, it can still read as prepared. In a startup, it can read as costume. Match the room, not a film.
