Bag Feet: Do You Need Them?
Feet of 8–12mm keep leather and canvas off wet floors. They add 40–80g. They do not create structure. Work totes that sit down want them.

What feet actually do
They make a gap. Water, grit, and floor cleaner stay off the hide. On a structured tote that already stands, feet keep the base pretty. On a slouch that pancakes, feet just become four more things that scrape when the bag folds around them.
Metal feet on cheap bags are hollow and bend. Solid brass or nickel-plated zinc with a wide washer inside the bag is the version that does not pull out. Five-foot patterns (four corners plus centre) help large 35cm bases.
When to skip them
Backpacks, slings, belt bags, clutches: no. A work bag that sits beside a chair: yes. A suede base without feet is a stain schedule. A nylon base without feet is fine; nylon wipes.
| Bag | Feet? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Leather work tote / briefcase | Yes | Sits on floors; hide stains |
| Structured canvas tote | Useful | Pale canvas base goes grey |
| Nylon backpack | No | Base is fabric; it hangs |
| Hobo / slouch | Usually no | Feet poke when it folds |
| Waxed canvas weekender | Optional | Wax helps; feet help more in cities |
Adding them later
A repairer sets feet with proper washers so they do not rip out at 4kg packed. DIY screw-in feet work on thick bases and chew thin fashion leather. If the lining is silk, pay the repairer.
Feet are hardware, like zippers. Cheap gold-tone that wears to zinc is the same tell as bad zippers — zipper quality. Match the existing hardware colour or accept a mixed look.
Questions, answered
- Do feet scratch wooden floors?
- Metal can. Plastic or rubber-capped feet are kinder at home. In the city, metal wins on wear.
- Can feet pull out?
- Yes if they were punched through with no washer, or if the base leather is thin. Wide washers inside, or skip DIY.
- Are bag feet waterproofing?
- They are a gap, not a seal. Seams still wet. They stop the puddle from wicking into the whole base.
