Cloth first, then colour
Linen wrinkles and that is the price of air. Cotton poplin and a loose weave oxford are the next best. Merino in 150 g/m² still works in dry heat because it moves sweat; it is worse in wet heat stuck under a backpack. Avoid polyester satin, coated stretch denim, and anything that feels cold and slick in the shop — that cold is plastic, and it will steam you by noon.
A short is a bottom, not a holiday costume, if the inseam hits mid-thigh and the cloth is opaque. A 3-inch fashion short in white viscose is a beach cover, not a city capsule piece.
The air-con layer is not optional
Offices and trains are cold. One unlined overshirt, a fine knit, or a cotton blazer means you do not freeze at 2pm and then boil on the walk home. Packable, light-coloured, no lining. A trench is for rain, not for 35°C sun.
Shoes that are still shoes
A sandal needs a strap behind the heel or it is a flip-flop, and flip-flops belong at the water. A leather walker in a tan or a mesh trainer that is not a gym shoe will do the city. Skip a new white sneaker you have not walked in; blister season is summer.

- Can I wear jeans in a heatwave?
- A loose, pale, non-stretch pair, maybe. Dark skinny denim in humidity is a bet you will lose by 11am.
- Is white the only summer colour?
- No. Stone, sage, washed navy, and a faded stripe all bounce more heat than black wool. White shows sweat; have a second top.
- How many linen pieces before it looks like a uniform?
- Two bottoms and two shirts is a climate, not a costume. Mix with cotton so every outfit is not the same wrinkle.
