The 5-4-3-2-1 packing formula
Five tops: two merino tees or henleys, one dress-adjacent shirt or blouse, one knit, one extra that covers a stain or a dress code (a white shirt, a dark silk). Four bottoms: one jean, one trouser, one short or skirt if the climate wants it, one extra trouser or the jeans you flew in. Three layers: the plane layer, a sweater or overshirt, a packable shell or blazer. Two shoes. One bag.
That grid covers eight to twelve days in one climate if you will wash. Add a dress or a suit jacket only when the itinerary names the event. A second climate (beach then city, or a wedding) is a capsule plus a pouch, not a second suitcase. Color story still applies: if it does not mix with at least two other items in the bag, it stays home.

Merino rotation so you pack half the knits
Merino’s party trick is odor. Two 150–200 g/m² merino tees can cover a week if you air them at night and wash once. That is the point of merino versus cashmere on the road: cashmere is warmer per gram and worse at this job. Leave the cashmere crew at home unless the trip is a dry winter city and you will not backpack it.
Wear the heaviest layer on the plane — see what to wear on a long flight — so it never eats cube space. A merino long sleeve under a shirt is a second outfit without a second hanger. Skip cotton tees as your only tops; they smell on day two and they dry slowly on a hotel shower rail.
One dress shoe, not a shoe bag
The second pair is the one that makes trousers look like trousers: a dark brown derby, a loafer, a simple heel you can walk three blocks in. It has to work with the trouser and with dark jeans. That is one pair, in a cloth bag, stuffed with socks. The first pair is the walker — a leather sneaker or a broken-in shoe you can stand in for six hours. You fly in those.
A third pair is how you check a bag. Beach flip-flops are the only common exception, and they weigh nothing if they are actually going in the water. Do not pack a shoe you have not worn for an hour at home. Blisters in a new city are not a style problem you can solve with another outfit.
Laundry in a sink that actually dries overnight
Fill the sink with cool water and a squirt of shampoo or a wool wash. Push the merino or the synthetic through, do not wring a knit like a towel — squeeze, then roll it in a bath towel and stand on the roll. Hang on a wide hanger or a shower rod, not a skinny wire that leaves nipples in a sweater. Most merino tees and most nylon travel underwear will be wearable by morning in a normal hotel.
Do not sink-wash raw denim, a structured blazer, or anything dry-clean only and then blame the fabric. Cotton jeans take a night and a radiator and still feel damp at the waistband. If the trip is two weeks, plan a mid-point wash day or a machine at the hotel. The bag that makes this pleasant is a 30–40L travel backpack with a separate wet pocket, not a tote that collapses when the merino is still damp.

- Can 5-4-3-2-1 cover a two-week trip?
- Yes if you wash once and the climate holds. Add a third merino top before you add a third pair of shoes. Two weeks with no laundry wants more underwear, not more outfits.
- Should I pack cashmere for travel?
- Only for a dry, cold city trip where it lives under a coat and not in a backpack strap. For everything else, merino. Cashmere pills under a bag and does not like a sink.
- What if there is a wedding on the trip?
- That is the one extra garment: the dress or the jacket the invitation requires, worn or packed in a way that does not crush it. Do not rebuild the whole capsule around one evening.
