The list is the budget
Not 'a capsule.' A navy trouser, a white shirt, a leather shoe, a knit in the earth colour. Four lines. Price them used first. If a gap is a winter coat, that is the year's purchase; the rest wait.
Where cheap is expensive
Shoes with cardboard shanks, trousers with no seam allowance, shirts that twist after one wash. The $15 top you wear twice was $7.50 a wear. The $40 merino you wear 40 times was $1. Secondhand wool and leather are where budget capsules punch up. Fast-fashion prints are where they drown.
Tailoring is a budget skill
A $20 hem on a $15 jean can make a $90-looking pair. A $30 waist nip on a thrift blazer is the difference between costume and clothes. Build that into the number. Free and ill-fitting is not frugal.

- If you already own shoes and a coat, maybe $100–300 spread over months. If you own nothing, the shoes and the coat are the budget, not 15 tops.
- Is shein-level fine for a trial size?
- For a t-shirt while your weight is moving, maybe. For the blazer and the shoe, no. They fail in public.
- What should I never buy used?
- Underwear, swim, shoes that are molded to another foot, anything stained in the pit. Coats, knits, and trousers are the used jackpot.
