Choker vs Princess vs Matinee: Necklace Lengths in Inches

Choker is 14–16 inches. Princess is 17–19. Matinee is 20–24. The names are old. The inches are what the collarbone actually cares about.

Choker vs Princess vs Matinee: Necklace Lengths in Inches — still life for this Jewelry guide on Nonchallant

The inch buckets, without the department-store poetry

Collar/choker: 14–16 inches. Princess: 17–19. Matinee: 20–24. Opera: 28–34. Rope: 45+. A 16 inch on a 15 inch neck is a choker; on a 12.5 inch neck it is already princess-ish. Measure first — how to measure a necklace — then pick a bucket.

Rigid collars and herringbones belong in the choker bucket because they cannot drape. A 1.5 mm box chain in 18 inches is the princess workhorse. A 2.5 mm curb in 22 inches is a matinee that reads like jewelry, not a lanyard.

What each length does to a neckline

Open collars and square necklines can take a 14–16 inch. Crews and turtlenecks want 20 inches or nothing. A 18 inch princess on a high crew is a chain sitting on fabric, which is how 1.2 mm cables kink. Evening V-necks can take a 22–24 inch matinee with a 15–25 mm pendant; they rarely want a tight choker unless the dress is strapless.

Building a three-length drawer

16, 18, and 20, or 14, 16, and 18, always 2 inches apart. Mix one box or snake with two cables so they cannot corkscrew. A 4 mm opera rope is a different sport — that is a single-statement piece, not layer three. Budget: gold-filled princess 18 inch 1.5 mm at $80–$180, solid 14k at $350–$650. Do not buy three plated 18s and call it a system.

Questions, answered

Is 16 inch a choker or princess?
On most adults it is a short princess or a long choker. The neck measurement decides. 16 is the overlap bucket.
What length is best for a pendant?
18–20 inches for a 10–20 mm pendant. Shorter, and the bail hits the throat. Longer, and it becomes a shirt necklace.
Do men use these names?
Shops do. Wearers say 20, 22, 24. A 16 inch choker is rarely the men’s starting point unless it is a collar on purpose.
