Curb vs Box vs Rope Chain: Which Gold Link to Buy
Curb is flattened oval links and the daily workhorse. Box is square and layers clean. Rope is twisted, looks heavier per gram, and snags knits. Gauge in millimetres decides more than the name.

Three geometries, three failure modes
Curb (curb, Cuban when heavy and twisted tight): oval links flattened so they lie in a plane. A 3 mm Cuban is a men’s default. It takes a yank better than it takes a sharp bend at a 0.8 mm solder.
Box: four-sided links, a square tube of light. 1.5–2 mm is the layering chain. 0.8 mm box kinks into a crease that a jeweler may not fully erase. Rope: many small links twisted into a round cord. Pretty, heavy-looking, catches on a knit at 2 mm already, worse at 4 mm. Figaro and snake are other families; this comparison is the three you are actually staring at in a case.
Pendants, layers, and millimetres
A 10–15 mm pendant wants a box or a fine curb at 1.5–2 mm so the bail can move. A 3 mm rope will fight a small bail. Layering: box + cable, not rope + rope. For how thick the whole neck should read, use how thick a gold chain should be rather than buying three 2.5 mm cubans and calling it subtle.

Hollow versus solid, and the $29 listing
Hollow 5 mm curb looks like a 20 g chain at 6 g. It crushes, it cannot be repaired, it is a costume silhouette in gold color. Solid 2 mm is the adult. Gold-filled curb 2 mm at $90–$180 is how you try a length before 14k. “18k plated rope 5 mm” at $29 is 0.3 micron on brass. You knew.

- Franco is a square-ish tight weave, popular in 3–5 mm men’s lengths, expensive per gram. Wheat is a braided look. Both are other products. Master curb/box/rope first.
- Which chain for a 2 mm paperclip?
- Paperclip is its own link. It layers with a 1.5 mm box, not with another paperclip of the same 18 inch length.
- Can a kinked box chain be saved?
