Does Sterling Silver Tarnish? Yes — Here Is the Timeline
925 tarnishes because silver meets sulfur, not because you bought a fake. Humidity, wool, and a bathroom hook decide whether that takes two days or two months.

The chemistry, without the myth
Tarnish is Ag2S, not rust and not “the silver wearing off.” Eggs, rubber bands, wool felt, city air, and hot-spring sulfur all donate the sulfur. Sweat speeds it because it is wet and slightly salty. A 1.5 mm chain has more surface area per gram than a 6 mm cuff, so the chain blackens first.
Fake silver (aluminum, coated steel) may flake or pit instead of going even gray. Even gray that polishes off is a 925 tell, not a defect. If a “925” ring also greens you in a day, you may have copper-heavy base metal with a stamp — same honesty test as green skin on gold-tone plate.
What actually changes the clock
Humidity over about 60%, a beach week, and storage next to a rubber-backed tray will blacken a 2 mm chain in days. A Pacific Silvercloth bag and wearing the piece (friction wipes early film) stretch that to months. Chlorinated pools are worse than tarnish: they can pit. Take 925 off for the pool even if you accept tarnish at home.

Tarnish is reversible. Pitting is not.
A cloth or a 60-second foil bath brings sulfide off. Once chlorine or a cheap dip has eaten grain boundaries, you are looking at a $40–$80 professional polish or a new $45 chain. Store silver dry, wear gold in the water, and stop treating black as a moral failing.

- Does real silver tarnish?
- Real sterling does. Fine silver (999) tarnishes slower. Stainless and platinum do not. Gold above about 14k yellow does not in any way you will notice.
- Can I wear sterling in the shower?
- A five-minute shower is not the enemy. Leaving it wet in a closed box is. Soap scum plus humidity is a tarnish greenhouse.
- Is blackened silver already tarnished?
- Oxidized silver is tarnish put on purpose in the recesses, then the high points polished. Do not foil-bath that finish.
