Fitted Sheet That Slips: Fixes That Actually Hold
The pocket is too shallow, the elastic is dead, or the mattress grew a 8 cm topper. Measure depth. Buy 40 cm pockets or add straps. Do not buy a smaller sheet.

Measure the stack, not the tag on the mattress
Mattress 25 cm + protector 1 cm + topper 8 cm = 34 cm of height. A “deep pocket 30 cm” sheet is already losing. UK brands often print 35 cm; US deep-pocket starts around 15 in (38 cm) and extra-deep 18 in (46 cm). Write the number on the inside of the linen-closet door.
A topper is the usual surprise. If you added one last month, the old sheets did not shrink; the bed grew.
Mechanical fixes, cheapest first
Seat each corner all the way, then pull the long sides. If one corner pops, that corner’s elastic is gone — common after hot dries. Suspenders: clip to the four corners under the mattress, or use side straps. They work. Hospital corners on a flat sheet over a slightly-too-small fitted is a workaround, not a life.

Buy depth the next time you buy cotton
Same fibre rules as always: long-staple, 300–400 percale or honest sateen. Add pocket depth to the spec list next to weave. Wash weekly as in how often to wash sheets; high heat on elastic is how a correct pocket goes slack in a year.
Questions, answered
- Will a smaller fitted sheet stay on better?
- No. It will ping off harder. Depth and elastic, not a death-grip width.
- Do jersey knit sheets solve this?
- They grip. They also pill and sleep warmer. Fine on a kids’ bed. For an adult percale bed, fix the pocket.
- Can I use binder clips?
- You can. They chew fabric. $15 suspenders are kinder.
