Gore-Tex vs Softshell: Waterproof or Just Windproof
Gore-Tex is a waterproof membrane. Softshell is a stretchy wind shirt that shrugs off drizzle. They are not competing jackets for the same storm.

Membrane versus weave
Gore-Tex is ePTFE (and now ePE in newer gens) laminated to face fabric, with a hydrostatic head far above 10k mm when intact, and it needs taped seams and a DWR face. Softshell is a dense, often stretch-woven polyester or nylon, sometimes with a light membrane, built to breathe and block wind. It is water-resistant the way a good sweater is — for a while.
Which job, which spend
Alpine and all-day rain: 3-layer Gore-Tex, burly face, $300–$450. City packable rain: 2.5-layer or Paclite. Cool wind, dry cold, stop-and-start bike: softshell. Wearing a 3-layer hardshell to the office on a grey day is noisy and sweaty.

DWR is maintenance on both
When the face fabric soaks (wetting out), even Gore-Tex feels clammy because sweat cannot leave. Wash with a tech wash, restore DWR. Softshell with a dead DWR is just a stretchy sponge. Neither jacket is a down substitute; insulation is a separate layer.
Questions, answered
- Is Gore-Tex the only waterproof membrane?
- No. eVent, H2No, DryVent, unnamed 10k/10k laminates. Construction and tape matter as much as the brand on the hangtag.
- Can I commute in a ski shell?
- You will be dry and overheating. Recreational 3-layer is bulky for a platform. A lighter 2.5-layer is the city cut.
- Softshell with a membrane?
- Some “winter softshells” add a light WP film. They still are not Paclite. Read the hydrostatic head, not the word membrane.
