Hand Towel vs Guest Towel: Sizes That Make Sense

Names versus centimetres

Hand towel: 50 × 90 cm in the UK, 16 × 28–30 in in the US. That is enough to dry two hands and a splash. Fingertip / guest / “decorative”: 30 × 50 cm, 80–120 g of cotton, often embroidered. Washcloth: 30 × 30 cm. Bath towel and bath sheet are the body sizes in bath sheet vs bath towel. The guest does not need a fourth vocabulary. They need dry cotton.

GSM 400–500 is plenty on a hand towel. 700 GSM on 50 × 90 cm is a wet brick on a ring.

What to hang when someone is coming

Put out a clean hand towel. That is hospitality. A stack of six fingertip towels is a hotel photo and a laundry tax. If you want a spare for the visitor who showers, that is a bath towel on a hook, not a guest-towel set in a basket they will not touch because it looks ceremonial.

• Visitor shower: one extra 70 × 140 cm bath towel, not a fingertip
• Powder room only: 30 × 50 cm is acceptable; still wash after the party
• Store extras folded in the linen closet, not displayed to yellow

Fold and rotate like the rest of the stack

Hand towels fold into a 25 × 30 cm packet that stands on a shelf. Do not file them in a roll unless you like them falling. Wash with the bath load. They take makeup and grease faster than a bath towel; 40–60C, no softener, same as the big ones.
