How Many Shoes Do You Need? Four Pairs, Maybe Five
A walker, a dress shoe, a weather shoe, and one that is actually yours. A fifth pair is a climate or a job. A fifteenth pair is a hallway.

Four jobs, not four colours
Count functions, not Instagram flats. The walker (leather sneaker, broken-in loafer, a flat that does not blister) is the pair you live in. The dress pair has a closed toe and a sole that is not foam — derby, pump, a clean loafer in a different leather. The weather pair is the boot that meets slush or the sandal that meets a beach, not both in the same climate. The fourth is the pair you should not wreck the first three with: gym, house, garden.
Colour is secondary. Two black dress shoes that do the same job are one pair with a spare. A tan walker and a black dress shoe will cover more outfits than three black heels of slightly different height.
| Job | Typical pair | When to add a twin |
|---|---|---|
| Walker | Leather sneaker or all-day flat | You walk 10k steps and the first pair is dying |
| Dress | Loafer, derby, or a pump you can stand in | Work requires a heel the loafer cannot fake |
| Weather | Boot or sandal, climate-true | A second climate you actually visit |
| House / gym | Anything you will not wear outside | Never — one is enough |
The fifth pair is a reason, not a sale
A reason: you teach, you stand in a kitchen, you have a dress code that names a heel, you run, you live where winter is a real season and the dress boot is not waterproof. Not a reason: they were 40% off and almost the same as the pair you already walk in. If you cannot name the outfit that only this pair unlocks, leave them.
Rotation is the maintenance
Leather needs a night off. Wear the walker Monday, the dress pair Tuesday, and the first pair lasts twice as long. Cedar trees in the dress pair. Resoling is cheaper than a new last if the upper is honest. Cheap foam sneakers are consumable — budget to replace them, do not collect them.
Questions, answered
- Is seven pairs excessive?
- Not if they do seven jobs — running, court, rain, two dress codes, a walker, a house shoe. Yes if they are seven variations of the same black flat.
- Do seasonal shoes count in the four?
- A winter boot counts as the weather pair. Sandals replace it in summer; they do not sit next to it in the same closet in January unless you live in two climates.
- What about one pair in every colour?
- Buy the shape that works, then one dark and one brown or tan. Colour is cheaper to add in a belt than in a last that does not fit.
