How Often to Replace a Toothbrush and Towels
A toothbrush is a 3-month object. A 400–600 GSM bath towel is a 2–4 year object. Treat them as different clocks, not one hygiene mood.

The brush is a quarter, the towel is a tenure
Nylon bristles fatigue. After about 90 days of twice-daily use they splay, lose the 0.2 mm tip that actually cleans, and harbour more film in the flared base. Mark a calendar or buy a 4-pack and open one at the solstice and the equinox. After vomiting or a confirmed throat infection, bin the brush the day you feel better — not the towel, not the cup. A $3 brush is cheaper than a second round of antibiotics.
A towel fails by GSM and staple, not by a dentist’s reminder card. Long-staple cotton at 400–600 GSM, washed without softener on the interval in how often to wash towels, still has loop in year three. Short-staple 350 GSM is lint by month ten. What “done” looks like on a towel

Buy the replacement once
A 4-pack of medium-bristle brushes is $8–$16 and a year. A pair of 70 × 140 cm bath towels in 500 GSM long-staple is $60–$100 and three years. The household that replaces $8 towels every spring is not more hygienic; it is worse at shopping. Wash before first use, never soften, hang spread — the same care that keeps them fluffy in the fluffy-towel wash. Questions, answered
- Do I replace towels after a guest with a cold?
- No. Wash them at 60C, dry completely, put them back. Replace the guest toothbrush if they used yours, which they should not have.
- Electric brush heads on the same 3-month clock?
- Yes. The head is the brush. The handle is not.
- Can a 700 GSM spa towel last longer?
- Only if it actually dries between uses. In a small bathroom a 700 GSM towel stays damp, smells at month six, and you retire it for odour, not wear. 400–600 GSM lasts longer in real houses.
