How Often to Replace Pillows

18–36 months for polyester. 2–4 years for down you wash. Foam until it stays folded. The fold-in-half test is more honest than the calendar.

How Often to Replace Pillows — still life for this Home guide on Nonchallant

The fold test beats the marketing year

Fold the pillow in half. A live pillow springs open. A dead one stays in a taco. Also: a lump at the centre, a sour smell after a correct wash, or a neck that only hurts on this pillow. Yellow ticking is sweat, not an expiry date — wash first, then reassess.

Cheap polyester is a 2-year object even if the label says 5. You did not fail. The fill collapsed. Budget $60–$150 for the next one if you care about loft in month 18.

Hygiene is not the same as structure

You can wash pillows and still need to replace them. Mites and sweat are why you use a protector and wash. Collapse is why you buy a new one. Do not bin a 14-month down pillow because an infographic said “every two years” if it still has 12 cm of loft.

Replace with a loft, not a brand mood

Measure the gap from mattress to neck. Side: 12–14 cm compressed. Back: 10–12 cm. Stomach: 7–10 cm or a folded towel. If the mattress died too — when to replace a mattress — fix that first or the new pillow will be compensating for a hammock.

Questions, answered

Can I restuff a down pillow instead of replacing?
If a local cleaner can add fill, yes, once. After the ticking is stained through and the baffles have blown, buy new.
Do cooling gel pillows last longer?
No. Gel is a surface. The foam still collapses. Treat them as foam.
Two cheap pillows stacked?
That is how you cook a neck. One correct loft. Replace, do not stack corpses.
