Seven days is the default, not a personality
Sweat, skin, and whatever you ate in bed live in the fitted sheet. Seven days matches how cotton actually smells. A 300–400 thread-count long-staple set is built for this. If a 1,200-count set cannot take 40C weekly, that is the ply construction, not your hygiene — see the thread-count myth.
Pets in the bed, night sweats, or a sick week: twice a week. A top sheet you barely use can ride to day ten. If you skip a top sheet and sleep into the duvet cover, the cover inherits the weekly clock.

Temperature and what not to add

Two sets is the only productivity trick
One set means you strip and wait. Two sets in the same weave mean the spare is already clean. Store them the linen-closet way: each set inside one of its pillowcases. Do not own five mismatched fitteds and no flats.
Questions, answered
- Can I wash sheets on cold forever?
- Cold is fine for a mid-week pillowcase. Weekly cotton gets cleaner at 40C. Cold-as-a-habit is how polyester blends hold odour.
- Do linen sheets want a different interval?
- Same 7 days. Cooler wash if the label says 30–40C. Linen wrinkles more; that is not dirt.
- What if I only have one set?
- Wash in the morning, dry fully, remake at night. Then buy the second set. It is cheaper than resentment.
