How Thick Should a Gold Chain Be?
Everyday on most women is 1.2–2 mm. Visible from 2 metres is 2.5–3 mm. Under 1 mm is a six-month kink. Match the millimetre to the pendant bail, not to a zoomed photo.

Millimetres you can see in a bathroom mirror
0.8–1.0 mm: delicate, kinks, disappears under a collar. 1.2–1.5 mm: visible at a desk, layers. 2 mm: the single-chain default. 2.5–3 mm: a presence. 4 mm+: men’s curb territory, or a statement on a woman who wants that. Photos lie because a 1 mm chain fills a phone screen.
Hollow inflates the millimetre without the grams. A hollow 3 mm can weigh less than a solid 1.5 mm and will crush at a clasp. Ask for grams, not just mm.
Pendants, men’s necks, and layering
Bail inside diameter must clear the chain: a 2.5 mm curb needs a bail over ~3 mm inner. Do not force a 4 mm Cuban through a 2.5 mm bail. Men: 3 mm is the floor that does not look borrowed — that conversation is men’s gold chain thickness. Layering: 1.2 mm + 1.8 mm + 2.5 mm, not three 2 mms.
| Gauge | 18 in role | Solid 14k ballpark |
|---|---|---|
| 1.0 mm | Layer only, kink risk | $220–$400 |
| 1.5 mm | Daily / pendant 8–15 mm | $350–$650 |
| 2.0 mm | Single chain default | $400–$750 |
| 3.0 mm | Visible jewelry | $700–$1,400 |
| 5.0 mm curb | Statement / men’s | $1,200+ depending on grams |
Filled versus solid at the same millimetre
Gold-filled 2 mm looks like 2 mm gold because the sheet is thick enough. Plate 2 mm looks like 2 mm gold for a season. If you are unsure of length, buy filled 1.5–2 mm at $80–$180, live in it, then duplicate in 14k. Do not “go thin to save money” in solid — a 0.8 mm 14k chain is still a few hundred dollars of easily ruined wire.
Questions, answered
- Is 2 mm too thick for a woman?
- No. 2 mm is a chain you can see. 4 mm curb may be the look you did not want. Try 2 mm in the mirror from 2 metres, not from a selfie camera.
- Does thicker mean stronger?
- Usually, until the chain is hollow. A solid 2 mm curb out-yanks a hollow 5 mm. Solder quality at the clasp still decides more than 0.3 mm of gauge.
- What thickness for a 1.5 mm diamond bezel pendant?
- 1.5–2 mm box or curb. The pendant is quiet; the chain should not be a 4 mm Cuban unless you want the chain to win.
