How to Build a Smart-Casual Wardrobe That Is Not 'Jeans and a Blazer' Only

Smart-casual is a leather shoe, a collared or knitted top, and a bottom with a crease or a dark jean. It is not a hoodie with a blazer as a hat.

How to Build a Smart-Casual Wardrobe That Is Not 'Jeans and a Blazer' Only — still life for this Wardrobe guide on Nonchallant

The floor and the ceiling

Floor: no gym shoes, no distressed denim, no slogan tee. Ceiling: you do not need a tie or a matching suit. Between those, a navy blazer, chinos or dark jeans, a shirt or a knit with a shoulder, a belt that matches the shoe. That set does dinners, offices that are not banks, and most 'come as you are but not like that' emails.

Two bottoms that do most of the week

A navy or stone chino / wool trouser, and a dark jean. Add a skirt if it is already your habit. You do not need five chinos. You need those two to fit and to be long enough.

The shoe is the dress code

Loafer, derby, a clean heel, a leather sneaker in a quiet colour. If you change only the shoe, the same trouser can do Saturday and a client lunch. That is the point of smart-casual as a wardrobe, not as a riddle.

Questions, answered

Is a polo smart-casual?
A pique polo in good cotton, tucked or neat, with chinos, yes. A thin polyester club polo with shorts, no.
Can trainers ever qualify?
A leather, minimally branded pair, clean, with a dark jean and a blazer, in some offices. Foam and gore, never.
What if the invite says smart-casual and I overdress?
A navy blazer you can take off is the safe overshoot. A full black suit is the overshoot that looks like you misread a funeral.
