How to Choose a Doormat That Actually Scrapes
Outdoor: coir or ribbed rubber, 45 × 75 cm minimum, 20–40 mm pile or ribs. Indoor: washable 800–1200 GSM cotton, 50 × 80 cm. One pretty 5 mm printed sheet is a sticker, not a mat.

Scraper outside, wiper inside
Coir (coconut fibre) at 20–40 mm scrapes. Recycled-rubber grids scrape and drain. Indoor cotton or chenille wipes the film that got past the scraper. Reversing them — a bath-soft mat outside in the rain — is how you own a soggy brick that smells by Friday.
Size: at least as wide as the door, plus 5–10 cm. 45 × 75 cm is the minimum adult mat. 60 × 90 cm if two people can stand on it. A 40 × 60 cm “welcome” print is a gift-shop object.

Backing and the floor
Natural rubber on stone is fine. Cheap PVC on a sealed wood floor can stain or slip. If you have underfloor heat, check the backing rating. Recessed wells want a mat cut 5 mm shy of the tray, not a curl that trips.
You will wash it or you will throw it
Indoor cotton: 40C, no softener, same logic as good towels. Outdoor coir: shake, hose, dry on edge — details in how to wash a doormat. A $12 mat you replace every autumn is a system. A $80 coir you never shake is a planter for grit.

- One mat or two?
- Two. Scrape then wipe. One indoor mat is a compromise that moves mud 80 cm further in.
- Are anti-fatigue kitchen mats doormats?
- No. They are for standing. Grit destroys them. Different product, different aisle.
- Coir sheds. Is that normal?
- The first two weeks, yes. After that, a blizzard of fibre means cheap coir. Hose it, then judge.
