Mattress Topper vs New Mattress: When a Topper Is Just Delay
A topper can soften a too-firm bed you otherwise like. It cannot unsag a dead innerspring. If you wake in a hammock, buy a mattress.

The 2.5cm test
Pull the sheets. If the middle is a valley you can see from the door, a topper will fill it for a month and then become a valley with a $180 hat. Innersprings that have taken a set, cheap foam that has crumbled, and any bed with a broken coil want replacement.
If the surface is even and you just hate the first contact — too hard on a side sleeper’s shoulder, too hot — a 5–7.5cm latex or ventilated foam topper is a rational experiment. Keep the receipt.

What to buy if a topper is the answer
Latex (Talalay or dunlop) 5cm, $150–$300, breathes and lasts. Memory foam is cheaper and sleeps hotter. Wool toppers help temperature and add little cushion. A 10cm cheap foam slab is a new, worse mattress sitting on the old one, and it will slide.
A strap or a non-slip underlay stops the pad from migrating. A topper does not replace a protector; keep spilling rules from mattress cleaning.
When to stop testing and spend
Eight to ten years is a common honest life for a mid-price innerspring or hybrid used nightly. If you already bought one topper and you still wake tired, you have your data. Put the next money into a mattress that matches your sleep position, not into a thicker pad.
Couples: a sag on one side is still a mattress problem. A topper for “his side is too hard” can work if the support below is even. A topper for “we roll into the middle” will not.

- Will a topper void a mattress warranty?
- Usually no, but a sagging topper hiding a sagging mattress will not help you make a warranty claim. Read the card. Photos of the bare mattress matter.
- Can I use two toppers?
- You can build a foam lasagna that slides. If you need 15cm of pad, you need a different mattress.
- What about a plywood board under a sagging spring?
- It can stop a further collapse for a guest room. It will not restore a sleeping surface you paid $1,200 for. That money is gone; spend the next sum on a bed.
