Quilt vs Coverlet: Which Extra Layer to Buy

A quilt is three layers and real warmth at 200–400 GSM. A coverlet is a thinner decorative layer at 150–250 GSM. Neither replaces a 13.5 tog insert in January.

Construction, not the shop heading

Quilt: top, batting (cotton, wool, or poly, often 150–250 g/m² of fill), backing, stitched through. It has loft you can pinch. Coverlet: a single decorative cloth, maybe a light fill, often matelassé or a tight jacquard, made to sit on top and hang. Bedspread is the older, larger cousin that goes to the floor.

GSM on the finished object is the useful number. A 180 GSM coverlet is a tablecloth for a bed. A 350 GSM cotton quilt can replace a 4.5 tog on a 20C night.

How to use them with a duvet

Summer: quilt only, or coverlet over a 4.5 tog — see summer tog and all-seasons. Winter: duvet at 10.5–13.5, coverlet folded at the foot if you want the look without the heat. Matching the cover to percale or sateen sheets is aesthetics; matching tog to the room is sleep.

Size is overhang, not mattress label

Measure mattress width + 2 × drop. A 150 cm wide mattress with 30 cm drop wants about 210 cm. A “queen quilt” that is 200 × 200 cm will look skimpy. Weight lives in insert vs comforter weight if you are comparing fill; a quilt is not a comforter unless it is sewn as one and used as one.

Questions, answered

Can a quilt replace a duvet year-round?
In a warm climate or a hot sleeper’s 18C bedroom, a 350–400 GSM cotton or wool quilt can. In a cold house, no.
Is matelassé a quilt?
Usually a coverlet weave that mimics quilting without the batting. Pinch it. If there is no loft, it is a coverlet.
Wool batting vs cotton?
Wool loft and humidity handling; cotton is easier to wash at 40C. Polyester batting is the cheap loft that pills inside the channels.
