How to Choose Hoop Earring Size (in Millimetres)

Inner diameter in millimetres is the spec. 12–15 mm is everyday. 40 mm is a photograph. 70 mm is costume unless the wire is 3 mm and you mean it.

How to Choose Hoop Earring Size (in Millimetres) — still life for this Jewelry guide on Nonchallant

Inner diameter is the only number that matters

Shops say “medium.” A 20 mm inner diameter is a 20 mm hoop. Put a ruler on a hoop you already like, inside edge to inside edge. That millimetre is your everyday size. Going up 5 mm is a noticeable step; going up 20 mm is a different earring.

Hollow 14k keeps a 25–40 mm hoop from weighing 8 g each, which is how lobes stretch. Solid 2 mm wire in 15 mm is fine and survives a bag. Solid 50 mm is a door-knocker; buy hollow or accept the pull.

Face, glasses, and the rest of the outfit

Short hair and a round face can take 20–25 mm without looking like a costume. Long hair swallows 12 mm; you may want 20 mm just to see them. Glasses with 8 mm temples fight 50 mm hoops. If you already live in huggies for sleep and gym, keep those at 8–12 mm and add one 20 mm pair for tables, not a 70 mm pair “for versatility.”

Budget and when hollow is not a dirty word

A $22 40 mm “14k gold plated” hoop is 0.5 micron on brass and will brass at the hinge in 6 weeks. A $70 gold-filled 15 mm is the daily driver. Spend solid 14k on 12–15 mm because those stay in. Keep 50 mm as filled or as a pair you take off. Hinge quality matters more than 5 mm of diameter: a click that fails at $12 is how hoops disappear in Ubers.

Questions, answered

Is hoop size the outer diameter?
Ask. Most fashion listings use inner diameter. A 2 mm-thick 20 mm inner hoop is ~24 mm outer. Inner is the useful number for “how big on the lobe.”
Will 15 mm hoops look small on me?
On most adults they look like jewelry, not a statement. If you cannot see them in a bathroom mirror from 1 metre, go to 20 mm.
Can I sleep in 25 mm hoops?
You can. You will bend them and snag hair. Sleep in 8–12 mm huggies. Save 25 mm for daytime.
