How to Clean a Mattress Without Soaking the Foam — still life for this Home guide on Nonchallant

Dry methods first

Rotate the mattress if the label allows. Vacuum. That removes skin and dust you would otherwise smear with a wet cloth. Baking soda (about 200 g for a queen) sits in the knit, absorbs odour, and vacuums out. Do not mix baking soda into a paste and rub it into foam; you want powder out, not a crust in.

Sun helps. Two hours of direct light on a dry day is a legitimate deodoriser. Do not leave a foam mattress out in dew.

Stains: enzyme, then patience

Blood, sweat, urine: cold water blot, enzyme product, blot, fan. Hydrogen peroxide 3% can lift blood on a light knit — test a corner. Chlorine bleach on a mattress is how you yellow foam and void a warranty. If the core is wet more than 2 cm down, you need air movement for 24 hours, not a fitted sheet at hour three.

  • Vacuum both sides and the piping
  • Enzyme on protein; blot, do not flood
  • 200 g baking soda, 2–4 h, vacuum
  • Steam only if the construction is sprung and will dry; skip on solid foam
  • If sag plus stain plus smell: replace, do not perfume

Prevention is a $50 cover

A washable protector, sheets on the weekly sheet clock, pillows on their own wash — how to wash pillows — and you might deep-clean a mattress once a year as theatre. Without a protector, every summer is this section again.

Questions, answered

Can I put a mattress in a washing machine?
No. Not a crib foam, not a topper you care about, not “just the cover” if the cover does not unzip. If it unzips, wash the cover; that is a protector by another name.
Vinegar on a mattress?
A light 1:1 mist on a stain, then dry hard. Vinegar does not disinfect like people hope, and wet foam is still the risk.
Professional extraction?
Useful on innerspring with a real dry-out plan. On memory foam, extraction that leaves the core wet is a downgrade. Ask how they dry, not how they spray.
