How to Clean Gold Jewelry at Home (Without Scratching It)

The 10-minute sink method

Fill a mug, not the greasy pan sink. One drop of unscented dish soap is enough for a 2 mm band, a 18 inch chain, and 15 mm hoops together. Soak 10 minutes. The film you are removing is sunscreen, sebum, and city sulfur — not tarnish. Yellow 14k does not tarnish.

Use a toothbrush sold for toddlers, not a kitchen brush. Pay attention to the inside of the band and the clasp gutter. Rinse until the water sheets clean. Blot with a lint-free cloth; do not swing a wet chain dry, you will knot a 1.2 mm cable.

What not to use, even if a comment said so

Toothpaste is a mild grind designed for enamel. On 14k it leaves a haze, especially on a polished signet face. Baking-soda paste is the same mistake. Silver dip will not help gold and will strip rhodium off white gold and the 2.5 micron coat on vermeil. Windex is ammonia; fine on plain gold, unkind to opals, pearls, and glue. • No toothpaste, baking soda, or Comet on gold
• No bleach, chlorine tabs, or hot-tub water as a “soak”
• No ultrasonic for filled jewelry, glued stones, or anything with a pearl
• No polishing cloth with heavy rouge on a 0.5 micron plate — you will polish the gold off

When to stop DIY and pay $25

Prong settings collect paste you cannot see. A jeweler ultrasonic plus steam is $15–$40 and includes a prong check. If a 14k hoop has gone dull from soap, a polishing cloth (not toothpaste) brings it back. If a filled ring is showing brass on the inner 2 mm, cleaning will not put the gold back.
