How to Clean Sterling Silver Without Stripping It

Cloth first, chemistry second

A Sunshine-style cloth has a microscopic abrasive plus a tarnish inhibitor. Two passes on a 2 mm chain after a night out is the whole routine if you store the piece dry. The $8 cloth outperforms a $25 bottle of dip for anyone who wears silver weekly.

Do not use a kitchen scouring pad, toothpaste, or a brass brush. Sterling is Mohs ~2.5. You will scratch a mirror finish into a fog that only a jeweler’s rouge wheel ($20–$40) will reverse.

The foil bowl, used like a tool not a science fair

Foil plus baking soda plus heat is an ion swap: sulfide leaves the silver and plates onto the aluminum. It works on a black 18 inch chain in under a minute. It also flattens the gray-black the maker wanted in an engraved signet. If the piece was sold as “oxidized,” stop. For everything else, 30–60 seconds, then a full rinse so bicarbonate does not sit in a 1 mm box-chain joint.

Dip, ultrasonic, and storage so you clean less

Silver dip is thiourea chemistry. It is fine on a plain 925 bangle for 20 seconds. It will eat a 2.5 micron vermeil coat and a 0.5 micron rhodium flash. After any wet clean, dry the clasp. Then put sterling in an anti-tarnish bag, not a velvet open jewelry box — velvet and wool are sulfur sources, which is why the box looks pretty and the chain is black by Thursday.
