How to Dress for a Rectangle Body: Add a Middle, Do Not Fake an Hourglass
A rectangle is shoulders and hips in the same postcode. You do not need a miracle waist. You need a line, a texture, and a rise that is not a tube.

Measure before you nickname the body
If bust, waist, and hip are within a few inches of each other, you are in rectangle territory. If the waist is clearly smaller, you are not, and these tricks will over-belt you. Numbers beat a quiz.
A rectangle can still have a seat, a bust, or long legs. Dress the actual proportions, not the word.
Build a middle, do not fake a hip
Tuck a fine knit into a trouser with a waistband that sits where a waist is. Add a belt only if the trouser has loops and the shirt has a clean hem. A cropped jacket that ends at the waist does the same job. Peplum and padded hips are optional theatre; they read as costume on most people over 25.
Texture on top, smoother on the bottom — or the reverse — stops the outfit looking like a column of one cloth.
What to skip on purpose
A straight shift with no seam, a drop-waist that lands on the hip bone, and a baggy jumpsuit with no belt will all lengthen you into a plank. They are not forbidden; they need a jacket or a shoe that interrupts the line. Wide-leg with a tucked shirt is a rectangle's friend. Skinny jean plus oversized boyfriend blazer is a 2014 default that still works if the blazer is actually shortened.
Questions, answered
- Should I always wear a belt?
- No. A seam, a colour change, or a jacket hem can mark a waist. A belt on a bulky knit just makes a lump.
- Are bodycon dresses off-limits?
- Not if you like them. They will show a straight line. Add a blazer or a shoe with a point if you want more shape without squeezing.
- What neckline helps?
- A V or an open collar breaks the vertical block of a high crew. It is a small change that does more than a ruffle.
