How to Dress for an Apple Shape: Shoulder, Rise, and a Soft Middle

An apple carries volume at the middle. You want a shoulder, a rise that does not slice the stomach, and cloth that skims, not clings.

How to Dress for an Apple Shape: Shoulder, Rise, and a Soft Middle — still life for this Wardrobe guide on Nonchallant

Skim, do not squeeze

A tight waistband on a full middle creates two bumps instead of one line. Look for a wide, stable band, a wrap, or a rise that sits above the fullest part and then hangs. Empire can work if it is not a tent. Bodycon through the stomach is a choice you will feel by 11am.

Drape is not the same as baggy. A bias top that skims is not a smock two sizes up.

Shoulders and neck do the balancing

A blazer with a real shoulder, a boat neck, a V, or an open collar draws the eye up. Cap sleeves that cut the arm at the widest point do the opposite. If you like volume on top, keep the bottom straight so the outline is a letter, not a cloud.

Trousers that do not fight you

A smooth front (no pie-crust waistband, no skinny stretch jean that carves) and enough cloth in the thigh. Wide-leg or a straight leg with a crease. Darker on the bottom is a classic because it works. Pale skinny stretch is the hard mode.

Questions, answered

Should I always wear black on top?
No. A dark or mid colour that matches the jacket is enough. A loud print across the stomach is louder than the same print on a skirt.
Are tucks off-limits?
A French tuck or a half-tuck into a structured trouser can work. A full tight tuck into a skinny jean usually does not.
What about belts?
A belt at the smallest part, over a jacket or a dress with a seam, can work. A thin belt over a tight tee is a tourniquet.
