How to Dry-Clean at Home: The Myth, and When You Still Need a Shop
Home “dry-clean” kits are damp bags and perfume. They refresh. They do not replace perchloroethylene or a trained wet-cleaner on a fused canvas.

What the kit actually is
The bag is a humid tumble. The cloth is water, a little solvent, and a lot of fragrance. Useful for a wool sweater that smells like a restaurant. Useless on motor oil, on a padded shoulder, and on anything the label marked F or P because the trim melts in perc — those need a shop that can choose a solvent.
Water is the real home dry-clean
Most of what people bag is washable. A 100% cotton shirt that says dry clean only is a shrink disclaimer. A viscose dress is not. Read the fiber, then the care label symbols, then decide. Wool trousers can take a 30°C wool cycle or a hand wash. A fused-canvas blazer cannot.

When you still write the ticket
Structured jackets, anything with a lining that is a different fiber from the shell, sequins, leather trim, and oil that has sat a week. A good cleaner is a technician. A $4 kit is a scented dryer sheet with marketing.
Questions, answered
- Does steaming count as dry-cleaning?
- No. Steam relaxes wrinkles and can help odor. It does not remove oil. It can set protein stains.
- Is professional wet cleaning the same as my machine?
- No. Wet cleaning is water plus a programmed machine and a trained operator. Your 40°C mixed load is not that.
- How often should a suit be dry-cleaned?
- Once or twice a season if you wear it weekly, plus after a spill. Brush and air it between. Cleaning every wear cooks the canvas.
