How to Fold vs Hang: Match the Method to the Cloth
Hang what has a crease or a shoulder you paid for. Fold knits, tees, and most jeans. The rest is how small closets fill with lumps.

Hanging is for structure
A blazer on a shaped hanger keeps the shoulder. A poplin shirt on a hanger keeps the collar. Wool trousers hung from the hem or on a clamp bar keep the crease. That is the list. Hanging a cashmere crew stretches the yoke in a week. Hanging heavy denim by the waistband is fine; hanging it by two thin wire hooks is how the waist warps.
| Item | Hang | Fold |
|---|---|---|
| Poplin / oxford shirt | Yes, on a wide hanger | Only in a drawer for travel |
| Merino / cashmere knit | No | Yes, file or stack |
| Blazer, coat | Yes, shaped hanger | Never long-term |
| Jeans | Optional | Usually — file-fold |
| Bias slip, silk blouse | Padded hanger | Drawer with tissue if you must |
Folding is for knit and bulk
Sweaters go on a shelf or in a drawer, never on a wire. Tees file-fold so you can see every colour. Jeans can hang if you have the rail; they fold if you do not. The rule is gravity: if the garment is heavier than the hanger is wide, fold it.
The hanger is part of the method
Wood or wide plastic for shirts and jackets. Clips for skirts and creased trousers. No wire from the dry cleaner — swap the same day. Cedar is for moths and for drying leather shoes, not a magic hanging system.
Questions, answered
- Should trousers be hung or folded?
- Creased wool: hang. Chinos and jeans: either, but fold if the rail is packed. Never fold a crease in half against itself for months.
- Why did my sweater grow at the shoulders?
- You hung it. Fold it. The bumps may steam out; they may not.
- Is rolling better than folding at home?
- Rolling is for bags. At home, file-fold. Rolling in a drawer hides what you own.
