How to Measure a Necklace Length (On You and On the Chain)
Measure the chain clasp-to-clasp on a ruler. Measure your neck with a sewing tape, then add about 2 inches for a 16 inch collarbone sit. Guessing from a photo is how you buy a choker that throttles.

Measure the chain, not the box
Clasp to clasp, including the jump rings, excluding a 50 mm extender unless you always wear it fully open. Hollow 2 mm chains stretch if you pull; use gravity on a table, not a tug. If the listing says 16–18 inch adjustable, find the first wearing hole, not the last.
A 2 inch extender ($8–$18) is cheaper than returning a 14k 18 inch. If you are between 16 and 18, buy 16 plus extender when the neckline is open, 18 when you live in crew necks.
Measure the neck, then add drape
Sewing tape, not a metal workshop tape around a throat. Snug but not a tourniquet, at the base of the neck. That number is not the necklace length. A 13 inch neck wearing a 14 inch chain is a true choker. The same neck in 16 inches is collarbone. Use the choker / princess / matinee map once you have the inch number; the names are just buckets.

Pendants, layers, and men’s lengths
Add the pendant’s height to the chain when you think about where the bottom sits. Layer at least 2 inches apart so 1.5 mm cables do not braid. Men’s default is 20–22 inches for a 3 mm chain over a T-shirt; 24 inches is a statement drop. Write the inches on a note in the jewelry box. Future-you will not remember.

- Is necklace length the inner circumference?
- It is the length of the chain as worn, clasp to clasp. For a rigid collar, inner circumference is the useful number; for a 1.5 mm cable, the laid-flat length is what shops mean.
- Why does my 18 inch sit like a 16?
- Broad chest, high clavicle, or a seller who measured without the clasp. Re-measure. A 16 from a careful maker will beat an “18” from a careless one.
- Do I include the pendant bail in the chain length?
- The chain length is still clasp to clasp. The bail plus drop is extra visual length. Shop by chain length, then add drop.
