Hardware is on the clothes first
Look at the blazer buttons, the belt, the bag clasp, the loafer buckle, before the necklace. Those pieces sit in the same visual band as your hands. If they already fight, no earring will mediate. Buy the next belt in the metal your daily bag already is.
A rule you can keep
One metal on the clothes, jewelry can mix if it is quiet. Or: jewelry in one metal, clothes hardware in the same. Mixing on purpose: repeat each metal at least twice so it looks decided (gold earrings and a gold ring, silver watch and silver bag) rather than one stray silver button.
Warmth of the cloth
Camel, olive, cream, and brown leather lean gold. Black, charcoal, and white leather lean silver. Navy takes both; pick from the shoe. If your palette is camel-heavy, forcing silver hardware all year will always look slightly off, like the wrong white in a paint sample.
