How to Organize a Linen Closet That Stays Organized
Two sets of sheets per bed, two bath towels per person, like with like, heaviest on the bottom. File, do not archaeology. A 35 cm shelf wants a 30 cm fold.

A number for each object, then stop
Sheets: two sets per bed, same size labelled on the pillowcase bundle. Towels: two bath, two hand per person, plus one guest pair. Kitchen: four tea towels. Spare duvet cover: one. Spare insert: the unused half of an all-seasons pair. Quilts and coverlets: one extra layer per bed, decided in quilt vs coverlet. Everything after that is a shop.
If the door will not close, you do not need better baskets. You need fewer 350 GSM towels you hate.
Shelves are a width problem
Measure depth. Fold to fit. File hand towels on edge so you can see every hem. Stack bath towels in twos, not eights. Put fitted-sheet bundles at eye level because those are the weekly grab. Heavy inserts on the bottom so a 2 kg 13.5 tog does not live on a 5 mm particle-board span.
- Label shelf edges: “Queen percale”, “Bath 500 GSM”, “Winter 13.5”
- Cedar only if you store wool; cotton does not need it
- No vacuum bags for down — they kill loft
- A dark closet still needs dry air; do not park damp towels in it
Rotation is the organizer
Put the freshly washed set at the back. The front is the next to use. That is how you wear the cotton evenly instead of destroying one set and museuming the other. Match that to how often to wash sheets so the cupboard is a queue, not a guilt pile.

- Baskets or bare shelves?
- Bare if you fold to the depth. Baskets if you have mixed remnants. Baskets hide the fact that you own eleven mystery fitteds.
- Where do spare pillows go?
- In a breathable bag on a high shelf, not compressed under the inserts. If they are dead, they are not spare.
- Should guest linen live elsewhere?
- One labelled stack in the same closet is fine. A second closet of “good” towels you never wash is how they go yellow.
