Empty it, then fail the count
A small closet in a city bedroom will not hold a 80-piece 'maybe' wardrobe plus luggage plus a vacuum. Aim for what you wear in 90 days plus a coat. Everything else is a bag for the basement, a donation, or a second person's problem.
If you cannot close the door, you are not organizing. You are compressing.
One system, visible
All hangers matching, all hooks facing the same way, shirts then bottoms then dresses, dark to light if you like, but type first so you can find the blazer. A second rail is worth it if you have the height; a double-hang of shirts over trousers beats one jammed rail of everything. Shelves beat hanging knits.
What not to buy
Six kinds of bin, a flock of thin velvet hangers that dump coats, a hanging shoe tree that hits you in the face. One kind of hanger, one row of shoes, maybe two boxes on the top shelf for off-season extras you will actually retrieve. Light in the closet is a better upgrade than another cube.

- Should I store off-season clothes in the same closet?
- Only if there is a high shelf you will still open. Under-bed if the bag is labelled. Vacuum bags crush knits; skip them for clothes.
- Do matching hangers actually help?
- They help spacing and they stop you from keeping dry-cleaner wire. They do not add square feet.
- What about a clothing rack in the room?
- A single overflow rail for next week's outfits can work. A permanent second closet in the bedroom is how small rooms get smaller. Edit instead.
