How to Prevent Yellow Underarm Stains on Shirts
Yellow pits are aluminum salts plus sweat plus time, baked in a dryer. Prevention is product, cloth, and heat — not a stronger bleach.

Aluminum, oil, and the dryer are a team
Antiperspirant uses aluminum salts to plug sweat. Those salts plus sebum plus heat oxidize in cotton and turn yellow. If you like staying dry, you can still prevent the map: fully dry pits after application, a complete dry before dressing, and no hot dryer until the shirt is clean. If the maps keep winning, the product has to change. Deodorant versus antiperspirant is the choice; vanity is not a fibre science.
A thin cotton undershirt takes the aluminum instead of the oxford. Replace the undershirt. That is the point.
Habits that actually change the cloth
Apply antiperspirant at night if you use it — it needs time in the gland, and morning-on-damp-skin is how you paint a shirt. Let it dry. Rotate shirts so the same oxford is not a three-day experiment. Wash at 30–40°C with an enzyme detergent after a hot day.
Heat sets the map. Air-dry whites you care about until you know they are clean. The rest of oxford care is cotton oxford care.

When the shirt is already yellow
That is removal, not prevention. Pretreat, enzyme, oxygen bleach on white cotton. Do not reach for chlorine on stretch. The steps are in removing deodorant stains. If the cloth is thin and the map is a year old, the shirt is now a painting. Retire it.
Silk and merino do not want aluminum at all. Use a compatible deodorant and a cleaner, not a sink experiment.
Questions, answered
- Will crystal or magnesium deodorants stain less?
- Often, because they skip aluminum. They also sweat more. Pick the trade. White marks from a stick are still a product film — alcohol lifts those.
- Do black shirts get yellow pits?
- They get white film and, later, a stiff, faded patch. Same chemistry, less visible. Same prevention.
- Is a “stain guard” spray worth it?
- A fabric protector on a shirt pit is a maybe and can change hand and breathability. An undershirt is cheaper and reversible.
