Mildew is a fungus. Perfume covers it for an afternoon. Sun, wash, oxygen bleach on cotton. If the fiber is eaten, it is a rag.

Smell is still alive
Musty cloth in a plastic bag is still growing. Dry first, outside if you can. Then wash. Washing wet mildew in a warm machine can seed the next load. Sun is a UV kill step on cotton that also helps yellowed whites.
Oxygen on cotton, nothing harsh on protein
Black mildew specks on a white cotton shirt: oxygen bleach soak, then 60°C if the label allows. On colored cotton: 40°C, oxygen, shade-dry so you do not add fade. On wool: you are trying to keep the fiber, not bleach the spots. Sometimes the spot is already a hole.
The closet is the rest of the stain
A damp wall, a packed rail, a gym bag left closed — that is the habitat. Air the room. Leave a finger of space. Do not store clean clothes in a wet bathroom. Cedar does not eat mildew. A dehumidifier does more than a sachet.

- Will vodka or essential oils kill mildew?
- Alcohol can help a surface. Scented oil is perfume. Wash. Sun. Do not oil a fungus into the yarn.
- Is chlorine better on white towels?
- It kills more aggressively and shortens cotton and elastic. Oxygen plus hot wash is enough for most household mildew. Chlorine is a last pass on empty-triangle whites.
- The smell survived two washes.
- Not fully dry between, or the machine’s rubber is mildewed too. Run a hot empty cycle with oxygen bleach. Dry the clothes in sun until they are actually dry.
