How to Resize a Ring (What a Jeweler Can and Cannot Do)
Plain 14k bands size down for $40–$90. Sizing up is more metal and more money. Eternity, tungsten, and many patterns do not size. Measure twice.

Down is easy. Up is a material problem.
Down: cut, solder, round on a mandrel, polish. A 2 mm 14k band is a short appointment. Patterned shanks lose the pattern at the solder; a good shop will recut the millgrain. Stones in the way of the cut mean the ring is a maybe.
Up: stretching cold-works the metal and thins it. Half a size on a plain 2 mm is the honest ceiling. Beyond that the shop adds a trapezoid of matching 14k or 18k and blends it. You will pay for gold grams plus labor. Platinum is $80–$180 because the torch work is different.
What will not resize, no matter how nicely you ask
Full eternity. Tension settings. Tungsten carbide. Ceramic. Titanium (sometimes, specialist, do not assume). Stainless. Many two-tone rails. A channel of 1.5 mm melee all the way around. If the shop says they can “stretch an eternity a full size,” get a second shop. Measure first with a real at-home method plus a $8 plastic loop, not a paper strip from a printer that scaled at 97%.

Beads, springs, and the knuckle problem
If the knuckle is two sizes larger than the base, size for the knuckle and add sizing beads or a spring insert ($40–$90) so the ring does not spin. Do this before you cut a 14k signet with a 12 mm engraved face — engraving plus a resize is a sequence, and the sequence is: size, then engrave.

- How many times can a ring be resized?
- A plain band can take several small trips. Each solder is a heat cycle. After two or three, a shop may suggest a new shank. That is not upselling; it is metallurgy.
- Will resizing leave a mark?
- A skilled polish hides a 14k solder on a plain yellow band. White gold will need rhodium after. Patterned and rose-to-yellow mixes can show.
- Can gold-filled rings be resized?
- Cutting exposes the brass core. Some shops will; the solder line can show brass later. Treat filled fashion rings as a $60 replace, not a $90 resize.
