Build it once
How to Shop Your Closet Before You Buy Anything
Lay it out, make ten outfits from what is already there, write the gap. The gap is rarely a seventh top.

A session, not a mood
Give it 90 minutes. Floor or bed, shoes in a row, hangers in one direction. You are not folding for Instagram. You are answering: what can I wear to work, to a weekend, to something nicer, this season, with what is here.
Write the outfits down. 'Navy trousers, striped shirt, camel knit, brown loafer' is a datum. 'I have nothing to wear' is a feeling that usually means you have 40 tops and one jean.
The real gaps are structure
After ten outfits, look at what you reached for every time. That is the uniform. Look at what you never reached for. That is dead stock. The missing piece is whatever would unlock three more outfits from the dead stock — a black trouser, a white shirt, a belt in the right metal — not a trend coat.
Then, and only then, a list
A shopping list with more than four items is a wardrobe rebuild, and that is a different project. Four or fewer, in the colours you already wear, tried on against the actual trousers, is shopping your closet's sequel. Do not shop hungry, sad, or in a mall with a time limit.
Questions, answered
- What if nothing goes together?
- Then you do not have a colour story. Pick the ten pieces you like most, force a three-colour palette from those, and let the rest go. Buying more into chaos makes more chaos.
- Should I do this every season?
- Once at the start of hot weather and once at the start of cold is enough. Weekly rearranging is procrastination.
- Can I shop my closet for a trip?
- Yes — that is packing. Pull a 5-4-3-2-1 grid from the same pile. If a trip needs a new jacket, the home closet probably did too.
