How to Store a Suit: Wide Hanger, Not the Dry-Clean Bag — still life for this Care & repair guide on Nonchallant

The hanger is the last

A wire hanger from the shop is a transport device. Leave it there. A wide hanger copies the shoulder so the sleeve hangs clean. Cheap thin wood is still better than wire. Plastic tubular hangers collapse under wool.

Why the dry-clean bag is a problem

It traps residual solvent and moisture against the cloth. It also rubs shine onto the shoulders. Recycle it. If you need dust protection, a cotton bag you can open. The weekly suit does not need a shroud; it needs space so the lapels are not crushed by a parka. Construction care is the same as not washing the blazer.

Off-season and travel

Clean first. Moths eat a soup-stained lapel in July. For a bag: inside-out jacket, shoulders nested, one fold, wear it on the plane if you can. Trousers along the crease. Unpack and hang as soon as you arrive; steam the travel out.

Questions, answered

Button the jacket on the hanger?
No. Buttoning pulls the canvas. Hang it open. Button it when you wear it.
Can I fold a suit in a drawer?
You can crease it into a rumpled rectangle. Hang it. Fold only for a suitcase, briefly.
How long can a suit sit unworn?
Years, if it was stored clean, dry, and on a proper hanger in a closet that is not damp. Check it twice a year for moths.
