How to Taper Trousers Without a Tailor (You Still Want One)
A sewing machine can take in a leg. It cannot recut a seat. Pin, stitch, press — then admit that $25–40 at a tailor is the real taper.

The honest version
Search results will show you a 90-second reel of someone running a denim leg through a machine. That person started with a pair that already sat correctly on the hip. Tapering is a width change from the knee to the hem. It is not a fix for a baggy seat, a low crotch, or a waist that gaps. Those are recuts. Recuts are a tailor.
A high-street alterations shop will take a trouser in at the inseam, re-press the crease, and re-hem for $25–40. A dry cleaner that 'does alterations' will often do the same job worse. Ask if they have a dedicated alterations person. If the trousers cost more than $80, that is the whole method. If they cost $20 and you own a machine, keep reading.
If you still want to do it at home
Put the trousers on inside out over the shoes you will wear with them. Pinch the extra fabric at the ankle and at mid-calf, not at the thigh. Pin a straight line from a point just below the knee to the new ankle width — usually 6.5–8 inches across for a modern taper on a woman's trouser, 7–8.5 on a man's, but measure the pair that already looks right and copy that opening. Mark both legs. Take them off. Baste. Try on again.
Sew from the original inseam, not a new line floating in the middle of the fabric. Press the seam open. Trim the excess to 1cm if you are sure; leave more if you are not. Then hem. A taper that leaves the original hem will twist. Jeans need a jeans needle and a longer stitch; a home machine will not copy a chain-stitched factory hem — that is why the DIY jean looks homemade from ten feet.
- Taper the inseam, never the outseam with the pocket bag
- Start the new line below the knee, not at the hip
- Match the opening of a pair you already like, in millimetres
- Re-hem after, not before
When DIY is a donation
Wool suit trousers, anything with a crease, anything with a lining, and any jean you paid real money for: take them in. A fused cheap chino you will replace next year: your machine. If the seat wrinkles in an X when you sit, no amount of ankle taper will fix it — the rise is wrong. Buy a different cut or see a tailor who will tell you that, not a tutorial that will not.
Questions, answered
- Can I taper with fabric tape and no sewing?
- Hem tape can hold a temporary ankle for a photo. It will peel in a wash and it will not take in a seam. It is not a taper.
- Should I taper jeans from the outseam so the hem keeps its original chain stitch?
- Only if you know how to move the pocket and the side seam together. Most people who try this skew the leg. A tailor can keep a factory hem. You probably cannot.
- How slim is too slim?
- If the fabric pulls across the calf when you sit, or the hem does not clear your shoe, you went too far. Leave enough to sit and to cover the sock.
