How to Wash a Doormat Without Killing the Backing
Shake, vacuum, then wash only what the backing allows. Cotton indoor mats: 40C. Coir: hose, never a soak. Rubber in a hot dryer is how you own a melted oval.

Identify the construction before the drum
Cotton face + rubber dots, labelled 40C: machine, extra rinse, no heat-dry if the rubber is cheap. All-rubber ribbed: hose and a stiff brush. Coir on rubber: face only, low-pressure hose, no immersing the backing. Printed 5 mm polyester with foam: bin it when it smells; it was not a washable textile.
A bath rug and an indoor doormat can share a 40C load if both are cotton and the drum can tumble. Grit in that load will sand your towels. Shake outside first.
The outdoor protocol
Weekly: shake and vacuum. Monthly or after mud: hose, brush with the grain of coir, rinse, 45° against a wall. 24 hours of dry before it goes back or you have installed a mildew pad. Salt in winter: extra rinse; salt kills coir faster than use.

When washing will not save it
Backing crumbled, coir bald in the footwell, foam crumbling black onto the floor: replace. A shower curtain you can wash is a 180 × 180 cm cloth. A doormat is a dirt tool. Retire it without sentiment.
Questions, answered
- Bleach on a white indoor mat?
- Oxygen bleach if it is cotton and the label allows. Chlorine on rubber-backed cotton can rot the backing. Prefer 40C and sun.
- Can I pressure-wash coir?
- A gentle fan spray. A turbo nozzle strips fibre and injects water into the backing. You want a hose, not a demolition tool.
- It still smells after a wash.
- The backing is wet or the foam is rotten. Dry longer on edge. If the smell is the foam, it is not a mat anymore.
