Dirty down does not loft
Body oil mats the clusters. A jacket that feels flat and cold after two winters is often dirty, not dead. A dedicated down wash strips the oil without stripping the natural fats the plumules need. Ordinary enzyme detergent plus fabric softener is how you get a wet rag that never inflates.
The tennis-ball nuance
Tennis balls help break clumps in a dryer. They also shed dye and leave rubber scuffs on a light shell. Wool dryer balls do the same job more quietly. Either way, low heat, long time, and you still have to massage the baffles. Two balls is enough; a bag of six is theatre.
If the fill is polyester, you are not washing down. Treat it as a synthetic puffer: cooler, shorter dry, still no softener.
When the machine is the wrong room
Fur trim, leather patches, glued logos, and a vintage baffle that is already leaking belong at a cleaner who knows down. Home wash is for a fully baffled, fully synthetic-shell jacket with a washtub on the label. Zip it, velcro it, turn it inside out. Empty the pockets of lip balm, which will melt.

- After the dryer has lofted it, yes, to finish. From soaking wet, no — the water weight packs the clusters into the bottom of each baffle.
- Do I need a special down detergent?
- It is the least-bad option. A small dose of mild liquid without enzymes or softener can work. The special bottle is $16 and lasts a season of coats.
- Why does my jacket smell after washing?
- Insufficient rinse, or it was not fully dry. Down that is 95% dry still mildews in a closet. Another 40 minutes on low, then air.
