How to Wash a Duvet Insert Without Killing the Loft
Cover weekly-to-monthly. Insert 1–3 times a year. Large drum, 40C, extra rinse, dry until every baffle is dry. A damp 13.5 tog insert mildews in the middle.

The cover is the laundry; the insert is the appointment
A duvet system exists so you do not wash 800 g of down every week. Follow how often to wash bedding for the cover. Book the insert for spring, autumn, and “the cat was sick.” A comforter you use without a cover is not this object; it needs washing as often as a cover and most of them hate that.
Check the label. Down: 30–40C, extra rinse, no softener, no bleach. Wool: wool cycle, low spin. Polyester: 40–60C. Silk fills: often a bag and a professional. If the label says dry-clean only on a $60 polyester, that is the brand dodging; most poly inserts still wash.
Drum size and the dry that actually finishes
Rule: the dry duvet should fill no more than two-thirds of the drum. A UK king 13.5 tog down insert belongs in a laundromat 16 kg machine. Tennis or wool balls break up clumps. Stop at 40 minutes, break clumps with your hands, restart. If any baffle is cool and heavy, it is wet. One more cycle. Mildew in a baffled box is not a stain you will get out.

Aftercare is loft

- Can I put a duvet in a 6 kg home washer?
- A 4.5 tog single, maybe. A 13.5 tog double, no. Water has to move. Under-filling with space is better than cramming.
- The insert came out lumpy.
- It was dried in clumps. Re-wet, extra rinse, dry longer with balls, break clumps by hand every 20 minutes. Do not iron it.
- How often if I use a protector on the insert?
- Still 1–2 times a year. The protector keeps spills off; it does not stop ambient humidity and time.
