Make it last
How to Wash Activewear (No Fabric Softener)
Polyester holds odor in the fiber. Softener coats it so odor has a home. Cool wash, sport detergent or a little vinegar, skip the pod-and-hope.

Why gym clothes smell after a “clean” wash
Synthetic fibers trap oil in the filament. Bacteria live in that oil. A cold short cycle with too much scented detergent leaves a film. Softener is more film. The kit never gets a chance to actually rinse.
The load that works
30°C, not a mixed 40°C with towels. Do not cram the drum — they need water through the knit. Inside out for fade and pilling. Wash the sports bra on a gentle cycle so the elastic lasts. Mesh bag for anything with bonded seams you like.
Deodorant marks on a black run tee are a separate pretreat; alcohol on the white film then this wash.
Drying and the lifespan of stretch
Hang. Heat is how 50-denier elastane goes baggy. If you must tumble, low and short. Sport DWR on outer layers dies in softener and high heat; wash-in reproof exists if you actually run in rain.
Questions, answered
- Can I use regular Tide on gym clothes?
- Yes, a small dose, extra rinse, no softener. Sport detergents are surfactants plus odor control. They are not mandatory.
- Does vinegar damage elastane?
- A rinse dose does not. A gallon soak is pointless. Do not mix vinegar with bleach in the machine.
- Why do my leggings pill in the wash?
- Friction against zippers and denim. Wash them with other knits, inside out, in a bag. Cheap short-staple poly pills anyway.
