How to Wash Bamboo Fabric Without the Pilling — still life for this Care & repair guide on Nonchallant

Treat it as viscose, because it is

Wet-weak, drapey, dye-happy. A 40°C cotton cycle with towels is a pill factory and a shrinker. Mesh bag for tees and underwear. Sheets: alone or with other sheets, never with zippers.

Pilling is friction plus short fiber

A fitted bamboo sheet on a rough mattress will haze. Wash inside out, depill with a shaver on dense jersey only, and put a mattress protector between the sheet and the hardware. Comb open knits. Softener will not stop pills; it will hold odor.

Temps that keep the drape

30°C wash. Air dry. Cool iron on the reverse if you must. Hot iron glazes viscose. If it grew on the line, that is wet weight; reshape while damp, do not tumble it back to size.

Questions, answered

Can bamboo go in with cotton tees?
Light cotton, yes, cool and gentle. Heavy cotton and denim, no. Weight plus hardware pills the bamboo.
Why did my bamboo socks go baggy?
Viscose has poor recovery. Heat makes it worse. Cool wash, air dry. Merino still wins for socks that should spring back.
Is there a special bamboo detergent?
Mild liquid is the requirement. The leaf on the bottle is optional. Skip enzymes if the piece is delicate and you have a wool wash handy.
