The sweatband is a different object from the crown. Clean the band often. Soak the shape rarely. A dishwasher cap cycle is a meme that flattens brims.

Sweat is the stain, the band is the filter
Oil and salt live in the inner band. That is what smells. You can clean a cap’s band weekly without soaking the crown. Same logic as hand-washing delicates: less water, more targeting.
Caps, beanies, felt, straw
Cotton and poly caps: basin 30°C, gentle, no wring, stuff the crown as it dries. Wool beanies: wool wash, flat, like a sweater. Felt: brush, steam at a distance to pop dents, never a washing machine. Straw: wipe, store with the crown stuffed so it does not fold.

- In a hat cage on cold delicate, sometimes. You still risk the brim. Hand-washing the band is safer and faster.
