How to Wash Towels So They Stay Fluffy
Fluff is loop plus empty fibre. Softener fills the fibre. Wash 40–60C, towels-only, extra rinse, full dry. Vinegar is optional. Softener is how you ruin a 500 GSM towel.

Softener is a wax, not a treat
Cationic softener binds to cotton and leaves a hydrophobic film. The towel feels “hotel” for a week and then will not drink water. Dryer sheets are the same chemistry on paper. If your towels already feel slick and bead water, wash twice at 60C with no softener and 100 ml vinegar in the rinse. They will not go back to mill-day loft, but they will work again.
Detergent overdose does a similar job in hard water: a soap scum that holds odour in the pile. One measured dose in a full but not crammed drum. Extra rinse. That is the whole chemistry.
The cycle that keeps the loops
Towels with towels, not with jeans, sheets, or a bath sheet mixed with kitchen rags if the load will not tumble. 40C for a weekly wash; 60C for sour smell, makeup, or illness. High heat in the dryer is fine for cotton terry if you want loft; pull them out on the dry-not-baked side so the hem does not go brittle. Wool dryer balls help air move in a 600 GSM load. Tennis balls are louder and work.

Hang them so they can finish the job
A bunched 600 GSM towel mildews at the fold. Spread it on a bar with a 5 cm gap to the wall. A bath sheet at 90 × 170 cm needs a 60 cm bar, not a ring. Fold only when dry — how to fold towels — so you are not storing damp. Wash before first use to strip mill sizing; new towels are not fluffy-failed, they are still full of starch.
Questions, answered
- Will vinegar wreck the machine?
- 100 ml in the rinse now and then is fine. Do not pour litres of vinegar through a rubber-gasket front-loader every wash. If in doubt, skip vinegar and skip softener; the second skip does the work.
- Why are my towels stiff from the line?
- Line-dry in wind and they go board-like. A 10-minute tumble at the end restores loft without baking them.
- Can I bleach white towels fluffy?
- Oxygen bleach on white cotton, occasionally. Chlorine shortens fibre life and yellows if you mix it with leftover detergent. Fluff is mechanical (water, rinse, dry), not chemical.
