How to Wash Viscose and Rayon (It Grows When Wet)
Viscose is weak wet. It lengthens in the wash and then tightens as it dries, often shorter and wider than you started. Cool, gentle, reshape, hang with care.

Wet strength is the whole problem
Regenerated cellulose swells and loses tensile strength in water. A viscose dress in a spinning drum is a wet plastic bag with a hem. That is why so many labels say dry clean. Many still survive a careful basin. Structured viscose with lining and fusibles does not.
The grow-then-shrink surprise
Hang a soaking viscose skirt and the bias grows. Then it dries shorter than the original if you used heat. Block it to the measurements you want while damp. A $8 mesh bag and 400 rpm is the machine version of caution. 800 rpm is optimism.
Iron and steam
Iron inside out, slightly damp, low to medium (one or two dots). High heat glazes it. Steam from a distance. Water spots on some rayons; test a hem.
Questions, answered
- Is rayon the same as viscose?
- Viscose is a type of rayon. In shops the words trade places. Treat them as the same wet-weak cloth unless the label says lyocell/Tencel, which is stronger.
- Can I tumble viscose on air?
- Still abrasion and still tumbling while weak. Flat or hang. Air-fluff is how hems go wavy.
- Why did the color bleed?
- Viscose takes dye readily and lets it go in warm water. Cold, separately, first three washes. A $4 color-catcher sheet is cheap insurance.
